Grants.gov Registration Process (Resource)

Grants.gov Registration Process

All organizations applying for grants via Grants.gov using the SF 424 forms must complete a one time registration with Grants.gov. Principal Investigators do not need to register with Grants.gov. An Authorized Organizational Representative (AOR) or Signing Official for the institution needs to complete this step. If you are unsure of whether your institution has an account with Grants.gov, contact your Office of Sponsored Research. This process could take several weeks, so applicants are strongly encouraged to begin the registration process as early as possible.

Instructions:
  1. Obtain DUNS # (Call 1-866-705-5711 or visit http://www.dnb.com/ccr/register.html)
  2. Register with Central Contractor Registry (CCR) (call 1-888-227-2423 or visit http://www.ccr.gov)
    • It takes 1-3 days to gather information and prepare the application (due to security information that needs to be mailed to the organization)
    • It takes 1 day to complete the registration from the time the information is submitted.
  3. An e-Business Point of Contact (EBiz POC) is designated in the registration process for CCR.
    • The Ebiz POC is given a password, the MPIN, which gives him/her the sole authority to designate Authorizied Organization Representatives (AOR) -- those who can submit grant applications on behalf of the organization.
  4. The AOR must then register with the Credential Provider ( https://apply.grants.gov/OrcRegister)
    • The DUNS # is needed during this process.
    • This step provides the AOR with his/her username and password, which serves as their electronic signature.
    • The AOR must wait one business day from the time the organization registered with CCR to get their username and password.
    • Once the AOR is able to submit their information, they will obtain their username and password the same day.
  5. The AOR must register with Grants.gov ( https://apply.grants.gov/GrantsgovRegister)
    • The AOR must enter his/her username and password obtained after registering with the Credential Provider.
    • Registration occurs the same day (when the information is submitted)
  6. The Ebiz POC must approve the AOR
    • When the AOR registers with Grants.gov, an email is sent to the Ebiz POC.
    • The Ebiz POC must log into Grants.gov using the organization's DUNS # as the username and the MPIN as the password and approve the AOR.
    • After the Ebiz POC approves the AOR, an email is sent to the AOR saying that they have been approved.
    • AORs can also log into the applicant home page on Grants.gov to check the approval status ( http://www.grants.gov/ForApplicants)
